HUNDREDS of proud scouts, brownies, guides, beavers, rainbows and cubs paraded through Kidderminster for the annual St George’s Day parade.

Organisers hailed the event, held on Sunday, April 23, as a huge success as the groups, their leaders and bands marched through town centre streets before attending church services.

There was a tinge of sadness to this year’s parade following the death of Kidderminster scouting legend Mark Woodward last month.

The scouts, beavers, cubs, explorers rainbows, brownies, guides and the senior section were joined by loved ones and residents lining the streets as well as dignitaries including Kidderminster Mayor Mary Rayner and Wyre Forest MP Mark Garnier.

Marcus Hart, chairman of Kidderminster District Scouts, said: “I am delighted to say that the parade was very successful.

“We had literally hundreds of Beavers, Cubs, Scouts, Explorer Scouts and leaders parading and attending St George's Church and St Mary's church.

“The weather was kind to us and it was great to see so many parents turning out to line the streets of the parade.

“It is great that we are still able to put on our St George's Day Parade thanks to an excellent team of volunteer marshals and SARA, ably led by Paul Goodyear at short notice this year as a result of the sad and sudden loss of Mark Woodward who had built up a great team of marshals."

Scouting in Kidderminster is welcoming more and more young people every year, and the reasons for this aren’t difficult to understand! It’s all about friendship, fun and most importantly, everyday adventure for our youngsters.

Scouting offers more than 200 different activities, and more people do adventurous activities in Scouts than with any other organisation. In Kidderminster District, we offer young people, both boys and girls, the opportunity to discover their potential through challenges and positive experiences that will enrich their lives.

As Bear Grylls, the Chief Scout, says, ‘Two things matter in life: following your dreams and looking after your friends. That’s what I love about Scouting, it’s about doing great things, loving and enjoying the great adventures, and helping others to do the same’.

There are 12 Scout Groups in Kidderminster and the surrounding area, providing age appropriate activities and challenges to boys and girls aged 6 to 14, as well as 4 Explorer Scout Units for young adults over 14, all run by teams of dedicated adult leaders who are vetted and trained to the Scout Association’s high standards.

Interested or want to find out more? If you’re a young person aged 6 – 25, or a parent, go to the JOIN page or phone our local Membership Enquiries line on 01562 829577 or if you would like to become a volunteer please visit the Adult Volunteer page.
